City of Melbourne
Melbourne's topography is characterized by a diverse landscape that transitions from flat coastal plains to rolling hills and mountainous regions. The city is situated at the northern end of Port Phillip Bay, where the terrain is predominantly flat, facilitating urban development. As one moves eastward, the elevation gradually increases, leading to the Dandenong Ranges, a series of low mountain ranges approximately 35 kilometers (22 miles) east of the city center. These ranges, with Mount Dandenong reaching an elevation of 633 meters (2,077 feet), are covered in temperate rainforest and provide a natural backdrop to the metropolitan area. To the north and west, the landscape features undulating plains formed by ancient volcanic activity, contributing to the region's fertile soils. The Yarra River meanders through the city from the northeast, carving valleys and contributing to the varied terrain before emptying into Port Phillip Bay. This combination of flat plains, river valleys, and surrounding hills defines Melbourne's distinctive topography.
